The Best Negan Quotes From 'The Walking Dead' That Prove He's More Than Just A Villain
Copy link
The Walking Dead isn't really about zombies: it's about the survivors, their new societies, and how they interact with one another. When it comes to these interactions, no one does it quite like Negan Smith (Jeffrey Dean Morgan).
First introduced at the end of Season 6, Negan quickly became a fan favorite character, if not one of the best characters on the show. Positioned as the cruel leader of a group called the Saviors, he quickly becomes a major villainous force in the world of The Walking Dead. This led to more intrigue and interest surrounding the character and is a big part of what makes him so unique and memorable.
Although he's usually an antagonist, Negan is an incredibly compelling character in both The Walking Dead and his spinoff Walking Dead: Dead City. He's charismatic. He's menacing. He's unpredictable. He's funny (in a morbid and macabre sort of way). And he embodies the traits of a leader in much of what he does with the Saviors. He's also highly quotable.
Take a look back through Negan's roughest and toughest quotes from The Walking Dead (and its spinoffs) and vote up the ones that hit harder than a barbed-wire-wrapped bat.

1'Lucille Is Thirsty.'
Episode: Season 7, episode 1 ("The Day Will Come When You Won't Be")
Negan's introduction comes right at the end of Season 6, continuing into the premiere of Season 7. Encountering Rick's group, the Saviors disarm them and force them to their knees. Shortly afterward, Negan appears. Negan rounds all of them up and selects one member of the group (Abraham) to brutally kill with his baseball bat wrapped in barbed wire. He then gives another speech and selects another victim: Glenn.
As he begins beating Glenn to death, he shares the affectionate name he has for his bat, Lucille. He gleefully adds, "She is a vampire bat!" as he laughs at the carnage (and bad joke) that he's made. This bloody, controversial introduction establishes Negan as a major villain in the show.

2'I Thought We Were Having A Moment.'
Episode: Season 8, episode 8 ("How It's Gotta Be")
With a group of his men in tow, Negan confronts Carl, who has arrived at Alexandria. They have a discussion about what happened to some kids in the sanctuary. As the conversation goes on, Negan tries to get under the boy's skin, but Carl holds his own throughout the conversation, making a request for Negan to kill him if someone must be punished. He continues to give a speech about it as a stunned Negan watches.
Then, it becomes clear it's a distraction, as Negan’s group gets ambushed. He yells, "Son of a b*tch, Carl! Was that just a play? I thought we were having a moment, you little a**hole!" Only Negan could express disbelief and a hint of genuine emotion in such a coarse, hilarious way.

3'No One Ever Thinks That They Are The Evil One.'
Episode: Season 9, episode 16 ("The Storm")
Following his daring rescue of Judith in the Season 9 finale, Negan lies in bed recovering. Michonne comes to visit him and thank him for what he did. They proceed to have a conversation during which Michonne talks about sanctuary. Toward the end, Michonne says, “Facing evil brings good people together.” Negan responds with this quote, leaving Michonne speechless. It's surprisingly insightful, especially coming from a guy like him who has looked pretty evil to the viewers and protagonists for much of the show.

4'Gonna Be Pee Pee Pants City Here Real Soon.'
Episode: Season 6, episode 16 ("Last Day on Earth")
After the group gets captured, they're rounded up in front of an RV and forced to get down on their knees. In an ominous tone, their captor tells them, “let’s meet the man.”
The RV door opens and out comes Negan, with his bat and a grin on his face. He asks, “pissing our pants yet?” before strutting out into the assembled crowd. As he continues to walk, he says, “Boy I have a feeling we're getting close. Yeah. It's gonna be pee-pee pants city here real soon.” Afterward, he sizes up the prisoners one more time, seeks out Rick, and introduces himself to him in a menacing way.

5'You Do The Same Stink Eye As Your Dad.'
Episode: Season 7, episode 7 ("Sing Me a Song")
Following a failed attack/ambush on the Saviors, Carl gets captured by Negan. Negan holds Carl captive, makes him reveal his eye, and has him sing a song. Later, he takes Carl on a tour of his area and has Carl show him where he's been living at one point during their many conversations, he tells Carl, “You do the same damn stink eye as you dad - except it's only half as good, cause, you know, you're missing one eye." This line is just rude, but also hilarious, thanks to Morgan's delivery.

6'You're Not Saving The World, Rick.'
Episode: Season 9, episode 2 ("The Bridge")
Rick gives a speech to Negan (who is sitting in jail) about people coming together when times are tough. Negan doesn't accept it though. He argues with Rick about what's really happening in the community, insisting they're thriving without him. Negan disagrees and insists Rick isn't a hero saving the world - "You're just getting it ready for me,” he says as he locks eyes with Rick, proving he can still be menacing, even when firmly imprisoned.
