Vote up the twist movie endings you wish you could untwist.

Audiences love to be surprised. There's nothing better than watching a movie and getting walloped by a twist that you never saw coming. However, not all twists are created equal. There are some movie twists that don't work, and others that are just plain ridiculous.

Movie twists that make no sense pop up in every kind of movie imaginable. Sometimes a good movie can be trucking along when there's a last-act reveal that's bananas in all the wrong ways. Or in some cases, a movie is just built around a twist, and if that twist doesn't work, it completely ruins the rest of the movie.

The fact that these movies have twists that we wish we could untwist doesn't make them bad; it just makes them flawed and that's okay. Vote up the ones you wish you could untwist.

  • The Plot: Baker Dill is a simple tuna fisherman who comes to a crossroads when his ex-wife asks him to murder her physically abusive new husband. With the promise of $10 million if he goes through with the deed, Dill contemplates whether or not he can help the woman he loves and save his son.

The Twist: There is no Baker Dill. Well, there is, but he's a computer simulation based on John Mason, a deceased Iraq War veteran whose ex-wife is married to an abusive new husband. Dill exists as artificial intelligence in a video game designed by his son, Patrick. Through designing and playing this game, Patrick is able to pump himself up enough to confront his stepfather and stab him in the chest.

Why We Wish We Could Untwist It: Serenity would be a fine little thriller if it was just about a tuna fisherman slaying his ex-wife's new husband, but this twist is absolutely bananas. Normally, these wild decisions make for absolutely nutso movies that have to be seen to be believed, but in the case of Serenity, it's just a super weird plot twist in a pretty boring movie. That being said, it's worth watching the movie one time to see just how weird it is.

    Terrible twist?
  • The Plot: While investigating a lead left by the previous M, James Bond discovers a multi-tiered terrorist group headed by Ernst Blofeld, who reveals that his real name is Franz Oberhauser. Aside from the usual twists and turns taken by a 007 movie, Bond discovers some seriously devastating news about himself.

The Twist: Spectre's twist isn't just your average Bond reveal - it changes the way every film in Craig's series is perceived. Blofeld not only reveals that he's responsible for every bad thing that's happened in the previous films, from terrorist plots to the death of Vesper, but that he and Bond are also foster brothers.

Why We Wish We Could Untwist It: This reveal is a little bit of a hat on a hat. Why does Blofeld have to be Bond's foster brother? Why not just let him be the evil head of an organization who's obsessed with Britain's No. 1 super-spy? Making these two characters into brothers may feel Shakespearean - but what's the point? The connection doesn't make the Bond series any more interesting; if anything, it makes it seem like the brain trust behind the 007 franchise ran out of ideas.

    Terminal

    Terminal

The Plot: In this twisty thriller, Margot Robbie plays a young assassin who wants to prove her worth to Mr. Franklyn, the head of an underworld organization, by offing the rest of his assassins. Along the way, she wipes out a creepy fellow on the subway and poses as a diner worker. All the while, a janitor in the subway is disposing of the bodies that continue to pile up. More assassins are slain and Alice continues to pop up where you least expect her, almost as if she's playing two different people.

The Twist: Okay so Margot Robbie is, in fact, playing two different people: a set of twins who were abandoned after Mr. Franklyn murdered their mother and left them to perish. Even worse, the twins were sent to live with the creep on the subway who abused them while they were in his care. After coming of age, the two girls trained themselves to be assassins so they could infiltrate Franklyn's criminal empire and get their revenge. Furthermore, Mr. Franklyn is actually the janitor in disguise, and he leads his vast empire from a secret lair hidden in the janitor's closet of a subway station.

Why We Wish We Could Untwist It: Terminal is exhausting. It's not just that the plot twists leave your head spinning, but the actual plot of the movie is a mess. That being said, it's fun to watch Margot Robbie, Simon Pegg, and Mike Myers, even if they're spending most of their time on screen delivering exposition. If we could untwist anything, it would be that Pegg plays an abusive creep, and that Mr. Franklyn is also a janitor with a secret crime room hidden in a closet. It's just too much for one movie to contain without falling apart.

  • The Plot: In the culmination of the Skywalker Saga, the Resistance goes into its final battle with the First Order while Rey uncovers the mystery of her bloodline. With the help of her frenemy Kylo Ren, she tracks down Emperor Palpatine and learns she's not related to the Skywalkers, nor is she bred from simple desert folk.

The Twist: Rey is actually Emperor Palpatine's granddaughter. This explains not only her extreme Force sensitivity, but also her abandonment on Jakku. Her parents knew that her malevolent grandfather was out there somewhere in a galaxy far, far away, and they didn't want him to get his lightning-fingered mitts on her.

Why We Wish We Could Untwist It: If you loved this twist, that's great. It's a reveal that ties into the narrative of the Star Wars films going back to Empire, so in that case, it's understandable why the decision was made to connect these two characters. However, it's disappointing that Rey isn't allowed to be a powerful Jedi on her own merits, and is instead only allowed to be a super-powerful space monk through her bloodline. This connection totally removes all possibility of anyone being able to be a Jedi. Instead, it suggests you have to be born into a special group of people - otherwise, you're just space trash.

  • The Plot: An astronaut played by Mark Wahlberg travels into the future while trying to save a chimpanzee he's become friendly with. After landing on the planet Ashlar, he discovers a civilization ruled by apes. Wahlberg leads a revolution against the human-hating apes in an attempt to get back to his own time.

The Twist: After bringing apes and humans together, Wahlberg travels back to Earth, only to find that in place of the Lincoln Memorial, there's a statue commemorating the evil General Thade, an ape who managed to travel back in time and arrive long before Wahlberg, apparently. It would seem now that Earth is the planet of the apes.

Why We Wish We Could Untwist It: It's impossible to beat the twist in the original Planet of the Apes - so why even try to match it? Audiences went into the movie expecting something to happen at the end, so Tim Burton had to give them something. If only it had been a little more subtle.

  • The Plot: Tyler and his father Charles have had a tense relationship since Tyler's brother took his own life. After Tyler meets a young woman named Ally in a class at NYU, his hard exterior begins to fall away and he's able to reconnect with his father. After spending a night in jail for defending Ally, Tyler is called to his father's office to meet with their lawyers.

The Twist: Tyler's father's office is on the 101st floor of the North Tower of the World Trade Center and their meeting is set for the morning of September 11, 2001. Yikes.

Why We Wish We Could Untwist It: Aside from not wanting to have the terror attacks of September 11, 2001, as a plot point in a movie, it's just unnecessary. Remember Me is a completely fine drama with some great actors, but the twist absolutely lets the air out of the entire movie.
