Elijah Wood was born in Ceder Rapids, Iowa, and spent much of his early childhood there until his mother noticed he had a talent for acting. Wood’s parents owned two delis in Iowa, but after much consideration, they ultimately decided to close it in 1989.

In April of 2010, Elijah Wood experienced a harrowing event when he was almost caught up in a magnitude 6.1 earthquake. The frightening experience occurred in Chile while Wood was preparing for a flight back to America after his animal rescue visit. Wood is an avid advocate for animal rights and is often outspoken about his love for animals.
He was invited to Chile by the Yarur Bascunan Foundation to help them with their efforts to rescue strays after an earthquake in February of 2010. During his time there, the actor was on many talk shows where he urged Chile’s citizens to try and help stray animals affected by the quake in February. Of the experience, Wood commented,
I'm interested in getting involved, because I love animals. I have three dogs, and grew up with dogs and cats. I like the initiative. One of the movie’s leads Elijah Wood who played Frodo Baggins in the franchise, was the first person to become an official member of the LOTR fan club.
The character Frodo is arguably the most well-known character of the franchise. Before the movie aired in cinemas, the fan club was established as a way for movie producers to ensure fans watched the movie. For a limited time, fans could buy a spot on the credits roll of the film.
