Which Best Picture nominee at the 97th Academy Awards is, in fact, the best movie released last year? According to Ranker's list of the Best New Movies of 2024, it's Dune Part Two, but that list predates the Oscar nominations and includes many more films, so let's see if Dune holds up so well when moviegoers like yourself vote on the nominees, which include surprises like Nickel Boys and I'm Still Here, along with predicted nominees like Wicked and Anora.
To simplify matters, we've included the Rotten Tomatoes scores for each movie in the running for Best Picture, adding a nice data point to inform your votes. For every movie, you'll find the review aggregator's Tomatometer and Popcornmeter scores. The Tomatometer score “represents the percentage of professional critic reviews that are positive,” according to RT, while the Popcornmeter captures “the percentage of fans who have rated a movie or TV show positively.”
Since Popcornmeter scores are user-generated, they sometimes deviate wildly from the critical score; Netflix's Emilia Perez, for example, has a Tomatometer score of 76% and a Popcornmeter score of 36%, suggesting either some review-bombing from overzealous folks or maybe just that Emilia Perez isn't a crowdpleaser. Either way, the score are usually closer, and in the case of Sing Sing, both are identical at 97% as of the Oscar nomination announcement on January 23, 2025.
The big show is set for March 2, 2025, so be sure to vote before the Academy Awards telecast and remember, this isn't about Rotten Tomatoes, it's about you. And also movies.
