Russell Stepped In As A Father To Hawn's Children
Hawn divorced her second husband, Bill Hudson, shortly before she met Russell. Hudson is the biological father of two of Hawn's children, actors Oliver Hudson and Kate Hudson. Both siblings have spoken about their estrangement from their biological father for most of their lives, and consider Russell to be their father, referring to him as "Pa."
Kate told The Today Show:
I have a great family. I have a beautiful mother. I have a stepfather who stepped in and played a huge huge part in sharing what it is to have a dependable father figure in our life.
For his part, Oliver addressed whom he considers a father in an Instagram post showing Russell, Hudson, and Warren Beatty (also rumored to be Oliver's biological father). Oliver captioned the post: "It doesn't really matter which one of these men is my father. My Pa stepped in when I was 6 and made me the man I am today."
Russell also has a son from his first marriage, Boston Russell, and he and Hawn welcomed their son Wyatt Russell in 1986.

2They Have Side-By-Side Stars On The Hollywood Walk Of Fame
In 2017, Hawn and Russell celebrated 34 years together with dual stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The couple likened the event, which is rarely a joint ceremony, to the wedding they never had.
Russell commemorated the honor with the following tear-inducing speech:
Goldie, to you, I owe my wonderful life. Simply put, Goldie, I cherish you. All of the stars in the sky or on the boulevard don’t hold a candle to that. So if I am to be honored with this sweet token of memorabilia that is to be sunk forever in the cement of a street whereupon I will be subjected to the constant harshness of the blazing California sun, blowing winds and pouring rains and stray dogs - of both the canine and human variety, perhaps in need of a little relief - and trod upon by the soles of shoes caked with earth from all corners of the globe, there's no one else I'd rather be next to for all of that than Goldie Hawn.

3Their Intimate Moment Was Interrupted By Their Own Movie
Russell and Hawn made one of their most famous movies together, Overboard, in 1987. While they generally don't like to watch their own films, Hawn told James Corden on his late-night talk show that they broke that rule in 2017.
While she and Russell were snuggling in for an intimate night together, the TV was on in the background to provide some mood lighting. But before they could get to business, the couple noticed their own faces pop up on-screen. Hawn described the experience to Corden,
Well, we first were going to make love. So that just put the whole kibosh on that. And it’s not like that happens every day! So we turned it [up] and we got so excited and then we poured ourselves another glass of wine. And we laid in the bed and we watched [Overboard].
And we hadn’t seen it like from the beginning, because we don’t watch our movies... I mean we had so much fun, and I will tell you, you know how sometimes you forget why you fell in love? I remembered everything, and why I fell in love. And it was really something to be able to watch that.

4They Starred Together Again As A Famous Christmas Couple
Although Russell and Hawn starred in two films together during the early years of their relationship (Swing Shift and Overboard), they didn't grace screens together again for 32 years.
In 2018, Russell starred as Santa Claus in The Christmas Chronicles, where Hawn had a surprise appearance as Mrs. Claus. Then, in 2020, both reprised their roles as the merry couple in The Christmas Chronicles 2. Hawn said she enjoyed starring with her beau again and getting to see him work creatively, as well as giving more depth to the character of Mrs. Claus.
While their children may be past the Santa age, as of mid-2021 they had seven grandchildren, ranging in age from infants to teenagers.

5Their First Date Was Broken Up By The Cops
To prepare for their roles in the WWII drama Swing Shift, Russell and Hawn decided to go out dancing to swing music in 1983. The only place they could find with that kind of music was The Playboy Club, so the duo went to the famous venue to get their swing on.
After dancing the night away, they both agreed they didn't want the night to end. Hawn had recently purchased a house she was planning to remodel, and invited Russell back to the empty pad. There was just one slight hiccup - Hawn didn't have a key, so they had to break in.
As Russell recalled on the talk show Harry:
We eventually found our way upstairs, looking around at imaginary furniture and we were in the imaginary bedroom, now, and we are realistically having sex when the police walked in... So next thing I [see] is the flashlight... and Goldie and I are both like "What, what?"... We were being told I guess to go get a hotel room, which we did. That was our first date.

Marriage Isn't For Them
Despite being one of the unique Hollywood relationships to stand the test of time (2023 will mark 40 years together) Hawn and Russell are not married. Part of the trepidation may come from past failed marriages, but Hawn has also expressed that for them, their partnership works because it's a choice.
Speaking on the talk show Loose Women, she said:
Marriage is an interesting psychological thing. If you need to feel bound to someone, then it's important to be married. If you have independence, if you have enough money and enough sense of independence and you like your independence, there's something psychological about not being married. Because it gives you the freedom to make decisions one way or the other. So for me, I chose to stay, Kurt chose to stay, and we like the choice.
